Need a little mental break right now? I’ve got just the cure … macarons.

Check out this amazing TCX color palette I’ve been working with this past week.  I took this pic last summer in Hawaii where there is an amazing shop selling these magical beasts (See La Tour Cafe … I just saw you can order their macarons online!).  I figured a little color splash would be a nice treat today – if I can’t have the actual cookies at the moment.

FYI – to my designer friends, if you’re new to working on textile designs the TCX palettes are a little different than the coated or uncoated pantones we typically use for print so it’s fun to create palettes for different substrates.  See Pantone Connect and get a little ‘mad scientist’ with textile color!

Color Palette – Pow! Wow! Hawaii

Over the summer I was able to go to Hawaii to visit family and while there we had the amazing opportunity to walk the Pow! Wow! Exhibit at the Bishop Museum in Honolulu.  If you ever have the chance to go – you MUST!  The colors and artistry are overwhelming and inspiring, with something amazing and new around each corner.  You also will love seeing the other Pow! Wow! street art in Honolulu.  To learn more and see where other exhibits are – check out their website.  

This color palette is taken from the mesmerizing wall mural by artist Andrew Schoultz (see @aschoultz on Instagram).  I think I stood staring at this piece from all angles for a good 20 minutes.

It doesn’t get more magical than this!  The gardens of Roozengaarde in Skagit Valley, Washington.  I’m definitely going to be ordering some bulbs from them in the future – check out their website and peruse their gallery images.  It’s pretty spectacular, what a magical place. 

I need to credit my Aunt and Uncle for these images – they are lucky enough to live nearby and walk the gardens every season.  My uncle’s words to describe the gardens and the beautiful people responsible for its creation were, “They are painters, and their paints happen to be tulips and flowers.”  He also added, “Van Gogh would have camped out here each Spring”.  I completely agree!  You know you’re in a special place when Buddhist Monks take selfies.

I’m celebrating LIVING CORAL today!  Pantone’s 2019 Color of the Year. 

For the most part I have LOVED each year’s choice by Pantone (though I was not a big fan of 2002’s True Red – which seemed boring to me, or 2006’s Sand Dollar for the same reason).  This year, however, is absolutely NOT boring. 

Living Coral 16-1546 is a spectacular hue for today’s transitioning culture and its desire to bring in the ‘Light’ and push out the ‘Dark’.  As stated by Pantone “Living Coral embraces us with warmth and nourishment to provide comfort and buoyancy in our continually shifting environment”.  It welcomes and encourages lightheared activity and symbolizes our innate need for optimism and joyful pursuits.  It embodies our desire for playful expression.
